Dialog<>Gentechnik holds Science Parliament at Wiener Neustadt

On September 15th and 16th 2010 the Science-Parliament will take place in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. Students will discuss issues like “Dual Use Dilemma In Pathogen Research” and “Biometrics As Security Technology” in parliamentary plenum as well as in committees, which will elaborate resolutions to be voted on in plenum.

Multi Criteria Mapping will be applied by students to explore possible and desirable developments in preparation for the committee work, to review relevant criteria for decision making and to identify social values that have an impact on the perception of these issues.

Due to the complexity and ambiguity of the selected topics an inherent part of the students' committee work is an expert-hearing. Students will pose questions to reduce acute uncertainties and to gain a deeper understanding of the subjects. This process will support students' competence and self-confidence to develop individual points of view and discuss viable solutions to be integrated in the resolutions.

This science parliament is part of the projects Value Dialogue and serves as a pilot to evaluate its potential as participation process to identify social values for a common good influencing or determining attitudes to S&T. This activity will be tested for its use as one pillar of a value based governance blueprint.
